If you’re looking for an inexpensive, educational, and fun place to take your kids look no further than Free Flight Exotic Bird Sanctuary (and Koi pond) in Del Mar. Admission is only $5 for adults and $2 for kids! The Free Flight Exotic Bird Sanctuary is a non-profit organization that shelters, nurtures, and re-socializes parrots while educating the public to inspire a lasting concern for the well-being of exotic birds.
My son and I visited Free Flight Exotic Bird Sanctuary on a Sunday. The staff members were extremely friendly and eager to teach us about these beautiful animals. We learned that most of the birds at Free Flight were relinquished to the sanctuary by owners who were no longer able to care for them. Did you know that parrots have really long lifespans? They can live to be 60-80 years old! Because of their longevity, it’s very possible your exotic pet bird may outlive you! As a parrot owner, you’ll need to have a plan in place for your bird’s care in the future.
The staff member also guided us through feeding the birds, petting the birds, and how to have the birds perch on our arms. We were so impressed with Free Flight Exotic Bird Sanctuary, I inquired about other opportunities the organization offers. Free Flight offers birthday parties, Junior Docent training for 13-17 year olds, Parrot camp for 8-12 year olds, and volunteer opportunities for adults.
