I was born in 1979 so of course I grew up on MTV and John Hughes movies. This week I’m going to relive my youth with some of my favorite 80s movies. Specifically, I was thinking of my favorite dance scenes in 80s movies and I came up with 10 favorites. Here’s my list of 10 best dance scenes from 80s movies:
1. Girls Just Want to Have Fun
In my opinion, this was the best dance off of the 80s. A young Sarah Jessica Parker is mesmerizing to watch in this movie filled with neon, big hair, and spandex.
2. Desperately Seeking Susan
I die every time I watch this scene. This was the Madonna I fell in love with at age 6. When I was in the first grade, I had a picture of Madonna affixed to my composition book. She was decked out in a black half-shirt, black lace, and black jelly bracelets up her arm. The scene was shot in Danceteria, where Madonna frequented in the 80s and got her start as a singer. I could watch this scene all day long.
3. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
The Beatles Twist and Shout dance scene is probably the best dance scene in a movie ever. I don’t think it will ever be topped. To watch the entire city of Chicago dancing is an amazing thing. And it’s the perfect song! Every time I hear it I want to dance too.
4. The Breakfast Club
This was fun to watch because the kids all danced as if they were alone in their bedrooms. It kind of looks like how I dance at home!
There are so many great dance scenes in this movie but I’m choosing the final dance scene.
I love this scene for its weirdness and artistry. What a great moment in cinema!
7. Pretty In Pink
MY. GOD. How awesome is this scene? How did Andy not fall in love with Ducky after these rocking dance moves to Otis Redding’s Try A Little Tenderness? Talk about feeling the music!
Kim Catrall was adorable as a mannequin who came to life. This movie was filmed in Philadelphia, in the very grand Wanamaker Building, which houses (still to this day) a department store. Having lived in Philadelphia for many years, I would go shopping there and picture Kim Catrall and Andrew McCarthy gallivanting around the store after-hours.
9. Dream A Little Dream
I have a soft spot for any movie starring Corey Haim and Corey Feldman. What a dream team! In this scene, Corey Feldman pulls out his best Michael Jackson dance moves and they’re pretty damn good!
Okay, so this may not be an 80’s movie. It was released in 1990, but it’s close enough! Cher, Wynona Ryder, and a little tiny Christina Ricci dance their hearts out. It’s simple, sweet, and puts a smile on my face.
If you’re considering a night in, why not relive your youth with one of these movies? Have fun!
